The South African Reserve Bank’s Economic Statistics and Research Department (SARB ERSD) relied on manual, time-consuming processes to capture and process critical financial industry forms (B Forms and C Forms). These forms feed directly into the calculation of national inflation indexes and assessments of country-wide financial stability - data that informs South Africa’s monetary policy and macroeconomic decision-making.
Key challenges included:
Digital Knowledge, through Senior Solution Architect, Data Architect and Data Engineer Robert Dobson, delivered a complete turnkey Business Intelligence and Custom Development solution using an Agile delivery framework.
The solution was designed for both on-premise stability and regulatory-grade security while enabling daily analysis and near real-time reporting.
The SARB ERSD solution replaced manual form capture with a governed digital and analytics platform. Data from the B Forms and C Forms is captured, validated and stored in an Operational Data Store, then modelled into Data Marts that feed reporting and analysis. A custom Financial Calculation Engine applies the required calculations consistently, and interactive dashboards give the statistics team immediate access to the results.
Because the South African Reserve Bank uses this data to inform monetary policy and financial stability assessments, accuracy, auditability and security were designed in from the start. The Agile approach allowed the SARB ERSD team to review progress in short cycles and refine requirements as the platform took shape over the life of the project.
